Biography
Dr. Huiyoung “Luna” Chun is a solo and collaborative pianist, and educator based in the Austin area. She studied piano at age five and started her career by debuting in the Young Artists Concert from The Piano Society of Korea.
After she graduated from Hanyang University (Bachelor of Music), South Korea, studying with Jooyoun Cho, She earned her master’s (Master of Music) and doctoral degree (Doctoral Musical Arts) with a mentor, Professor Andrew Brownell at the University of Texas at Austin.
Huiyoung has won various competitions not only ensemble competition awards such as the Korea-Asia Open Competition and Piano Duo Association of Korea Competition, but also solo competitions including the Music Education News Competition, Klasse Philharmonic Competition, American Fine Arts Festival Concerto Competition, and the placing of prize in the MTNA Competition.
She had the honor of being invited to the University of Houston International Piano Festival Master Class Series, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Ascent Music Festival, and the International Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg in 2022, and has played in the masterclasses for Robert Levin, Malcolm Bilson, Gilbert Kalisth, James Anagnoson, and Sean Chen.
She has given several local performances as a collaborative pianist actively engaged in her community. Some of her performances with a violinist were broadcast on Austin’s Classical Music Radio Station (KMFA 89.5) as a part of the Butler School of Music’s Vital Sound Series. She was invited by the Korean Arts and Culture Association and played C. Saint-Saens' “The Carnival of the Animal”. In 2023, as a first member, of the piano duo “Amicus”, she made her first concert in the Steinway Gallery in Austin.
With her final proposal “The Keyboard Fantasia: Improvisation and Expressivity in the 18th Century”, she has presented the lecture recital at the CMS (College Music Society) regional conference and has been selected as a student winner.
In recent years, she has participated as a faculty member of Austin Chamber Music Center, and judge at the TMTA All-Star Festival. She has played for UIL and Young Artists Concerts as a collaborative pianist, and she is currently teaching students of all ages, owning her independent studio, and at the academy as a faculty member.
